NIGHTSWIM is reverence to our planet and people and a nod to planet earth. It is the result of two years of research, testing, developing and strategizing on how to apply principles of eco and ethical designs to bring you a collection that cares about the environment. A whole lot of love and labor went into this project with the initiative to reshape the way everyone looks at fashion.
There is a lot of information below about NIGHTSWIM and even more important information about our industry. If you are interested, I invite you take the time to read. It is eye-opening and inspiring.
DESIGN CONCEPTS - Fast Fashion collections are refreshed 8 times a year and is dominating the industry because of higher production quantities delivering lower prices for the consumer which means more accessibility to fleeting trends. The result is 13.1 million tons of textile goods in landfills. We take a slower approach, with pieces intended to last longer than a trending hot second. Simpler silhouettes that are timeless with no added fuss and are produced at a scale that is proportional to demand in order to minimize waste and maximize the quality of value in every piece. Longer lasting, sustainable and environmentally conscious.
PRINTING - Our initial efforts to print using low-water consumption sublimation techniques failed because it cannot be done to the natural, organic fibers. In the meantime, we went on to test a digital printing alternative, which is essentially a computerized version of the traditional screen or rotary printing methods.
DYES - You’ve probably heard by now that dye runoff is detrimental to our water supply, yet design and quality are compromised when working with natural dyes which have extremely limited colors. NIGHTSWIM sought out an alternative in the form of azo-free dyes which are chemically based to give the same color palette as conventional dyes without the use of certain toxic chemicals and metal compounds. Azo-free dyes have a higher fabric absorption rate which means less chemical and grey water runoff into the environment.
TEXTILES - During the initial stages of fabric scouting, we quickly discovered that recycled, eco-friendly material is quite the scarcity, especially when sourcing locally in LA mills. We selected a recycled polyester and organic cotton blend that you will love. Also - its kinda cool to say that at one point in your life, you probably help create it! The recycled, manufactured fiber is produced from raw materials collected from post-consumer, recycled products such as polyester fiber made from plastic bottles. We chose to mix the organic cotton with the recycled polyester which is responsibly grown and produced. Our third fiber is a soft, supple challis - a woven fabric that is 100% sustainable made with rayon. Rayon is made from regenerated cellulose fiber from a natural, renewable resource: plants: sustainably harvested beech trees using an environmentally friendly leaching method for their cellulosic fibers.
PACKAGING - Many retailers require the shipping of products to be individually wrapped in a poly bag which resulted in 1 trillion plastic bags being consumed. Since cutting trees and using useless plastic isn’t our thing, we use a bio-cassava bag which is the ideal replacement to petroleum-based plastic bags. Its nontoxic, with high performance for carrying weights and excellent oxygen barrier and anti-static properties. Compostable and biodegradable. We package each towel in self-fabric scraps which reduces our overall waste to less than 2%.
FACTORY - This has been the biggest challenge of them all, producing locally in Los Angeles is a priority. Many local factories though considered fair are not environmentally friendly or fair-trade enough for our standards. Most contribute towards fashion waste and some even illegally pay workers less than min-wage. We have never compromised our core values, sourced for the right factory even though it lead to delays in our launch date. The garment manufacturer we went with is located in the piñata district of downtown Los Angeles and is a hidden gem who prides themselves in high-quality craftsmanship with a strong ethos built in sustainable and ethical practices. Their services reflect towards a progressive movement taking care of its operators, reducing waste and rejecting unhealthy working conditions.
CARE - Each piece is intended to be cared for responsibly, machine wash cold and hang dry. Skip the dryer, your clothes will last longer and you’re doing a good deed for mama earth, so why not? Plus our airy fabrics quickly dry! Two-thirds of clothes’ carbon footprint occurs after you take it home, so take it home responsibly.
GIVING BACK - For our first collection we will be giving 10% of all sales to our fellow badass friends at Operation Rich Coast who share our common love for the environment and work endlessly to protect the Earth.
